Despite the cooler than normal May morning, the Moses Lake Carp Classic saw its biggest turnout to date. The Carp Classic drew both local and traveling shooters, some traveling from as far off as St. George Utah, and Kalispel Montana, all looking for the opportunity to compete on Moses Lake.
This year's tournament was a huge success. We had 38 boats and 101 participants! We were thrilled with the turnout. The weather started off beautiful, but the wind and overcast skies turned up for the afternoon - this makes for tough shooting conditions. Still, the total fish shot was 203!
- Ty Swartout, Tournament Director
A total of 101 participants and 38 boats launched from Connelly Park to take part in this year’s bowfishing tournament. Shooters spread throughout the lake in pursuit of their quarry battling high water levels, low water temperatures, and afternoon winds. While the conditions were not ideal, many boats were able to land more than a few fish during the ten-hour tournament. Aside from the weather, the tournament went well.
Weigh-in started at 5 pm with a larger number of spectators in addition to the participants. Carp were weighed and counted before being handed over to a commercial crawfish fisherman, who uses them as bait.
Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, some teams put up big numbers with 203 fish and 3,000 pounds of carp removed from the lake. As part of the tournament, numbers, fish size, and overall weight were important metrics to determine the tournament awards. The highlights include the largest carp (29.4 pounds) taken by the team of Colby Myers, Trever Gibson & Christian Ellinger, and the most carp harvested (23 fish) by the team of Alex & Victor Mendoza. The size of the carp removed is easily highlighted with the Big 10 fish weighing a total of 172.4 pounds from the team of John Wall, Sean & Karla Manderville.
In only the first few years, the Moses Lake Carp Classic has become one of the largest tournaments in Washington State and will hopefully continue to grow in the coming years. With growing support from the community, the Moses Lake Carp Classic will continue to do its part to help remove carp from the lake and improve water quality in the lake.
Thank you to our 2022 Moses Lake Carp Classic sponsors and all the participants who came out this year -- the tournament was a huge success thanks to you!
